Students Have Option to Change Their Name and Gender Designation

Seattle Public Schools serves a rich and diverse community and we are dedicated to providing safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools for all students regardless of their religion, race, ethnicity, country of origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

How to Request Changes

Students, parents or guardians may request a change of student gender and name by contacting their school secretary or registrar. 

Gender-Inclusive Schools Across Washington State

Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has determined that in Washington public schools, students have the right to be addressed by their requested name, pronoun (e.g., he/him, she/her, they/them, etc.), and gender designation.

Civil rights laws prohibit discrimination and discriminatory harassment on the basis of gender expression and gender identity in Washington public schools.

Legal name change or gender designation change is not required in order for public schools to use the student’s requested name, pronoun, and gender designation during class, on seating charts, during roll call, on tests and assignments, and on other public school records. Read more on the OSPI website.
