Building for Learning, 1862-2022
New Seattle Public School Histories, 1862-2022 book available now!
Seattle is a city rich with neighborhoods. Concurrent with the development of those neighborhoods was the birth and development of neighborhood schools. It is the purpose of this work to present a brief history of each school that has operated within the Seattle School District since its origin, extending back to 1862, seven years before the city was incorporated.
The original Building for Learning: Seattle Public School Histories, 1862-2000 book was written by Nile Thompson and Carolyn J. Marr. Learn more about the original Building for Learning book.
In 2022, the Records and Archives Department partnered with HistoryLink.org to publish an updated version of this book to include more current history. We are thankful to all of the people who contributed to this project and to create such a rich history!
According to one reader, “the book is an absolute treasure. It is so amazing to learn about all of the building structure iterations on the way to the final look; Franklin and Horace Mann are good cases in point.” ~ Harvey, 1964 Franklin graduate and former SPS employee
The individual chapters have been digitized and links have been provided below as a courtesy to our schools and our community. We hope you enjoy this material no matter the format you choose!
